Do it Yourself  (DIY) Halloween Neck Garland

Inspiration: It’s all around but sometimes it can play hide and seek with us. All I need to do is look closely into things that people do and make. Whenever I need inspiration I go to Etsy or Notcot and try to follow people whose work is so incredible and amazing that you not only get motivated to do something but it makes you get up and start doing it NOW!

In the last few months I have been creating banners and buntings for Halloween. During this time I have come across some epic creative banners, buntings, home & party decor, gifts etc. on Etsy. Later when I created banners I wondered how would somebody else make these if they have to. I take classes every now and then at McLean Country Art Center and teach young girls and women ethnic art work like Batik and Tie & Dye. I always enjoyed those classes since I had to put some order and process to my chaotic work-style of doing things and that was challenging but fun too.

So today when my friend’s daughter Meg asked me how can she create some Halloween party favor, I came up with the idea of Neck Garland or Necklace with a hand-painted leather/vinyl pennant strung in a satin ribbon. So here we go –

Banner-o-Zilla !!!

Halloween on Fire!

Halloween is not to far and I’m all excited. I’m ready for candy corn, visiting haunted mansions, watching scary movies (may be not the real scary ones :)) and I’m already thinking about Halloween costumes.

There is something else that is exciting for me this year. I am designing and creating handmade banners and buntings for halloween. I’ve already created quite a few (see here), have about a dozen more in the works and plan to design at least a dozen more. This is a Banner-o-Zilla year for me and I am so scared of it (I mean I love it!).

Magnificent Menagerie – Circus, Art & Magic

Today I attended a local event “Magnificent Menagerie” at the University Galleries at Illinois State University campus in Normal, IL. It was very nice of Tony Preston whom I know from McLean County Arts Center (where I have given few Batik and Tie & Die classes from time to time) to bring this wonderful event to my attention. Thank you Tony.

It was a fun-fun event with world famous mime artist T. Daniel and Laurie Willets performing live. The mime performances I remember are from the circuses I saw when I was a little girl in India and later as an adult in San Francisco when I went to see the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus with family. However to see a mime performer up close is a different experience, it’s fun but at the same time a realization that it’s an extremely skilled art. Everybody at the event – young, old, kids had a great time watching the mime masters perform.

“Doc” Barth’s performance was a pure treat. I thoroughly enjoyed his story telling, humor and short history trips to the era of miracle cures and Vaudevillian magic of late 18th & early 19th century, when side-shows and circuses were the “heart of American show business”.

The artwork in the gallery from legendary artist Glen C Davies took me down the childhood memory lanes of childhood when circus was the most wonderful thing and people in the circus were most amazing. I am glad I went to this event today. What a wonderful day!

Bunting and Banners

There are many things in life that are symbols of fun, frolic, holiday, festivities and community. Bunting, Flags & Banners fall in that category of things only and that’s why I love them. This is not new for me. While growing up in India bunting and banners made me happy because I knew that somewhere around the corner there must be some festivities going on.

In Hindi language there is a specific word “Jhandi” which simply means textile bunting. I’m so in love with the colors, designs, patterns and styes that can be used to make the “Jhandi” that this year I’m going to create a lot of them. For different seasons, occasions, events and even some to express certain emotions. Yes I’m going to do it. I’ve some of them almost ready and they will be up on the website very very soon.

Friends get ready for some awesome “Jhandi” (textile bunting) that will be available for sale. I would love to know if there are any specific styles or themes of bunting you would like to see and I would be more than happy to create them just for you.

This summer bunting is my love and I mean both the textile bunting and the beautiful bird.

A little late!

Brooch for Father's Day

Banner for Best Dad

Banner of Best Dad can be put in Dad’s room, work room and if he a cook then it can be put in the kitchen. There are so many ways you can surprise your Dad. The Brooch is little more personal. It has a pin on the back (brooch pin) and so it can be put on anything that Dad like. For example it can be put on his hat, shirt, coat or jacket.

I have been so caught up in creating artwork for Father’s Day that I actually never finished the work. It just somehow kept on going and going. Well what I can do? I’m still going to put them up on my blog, why not it’s my blog. I can create similar artwork for other occasions also. So if you are interested in it please feel free to contact me.

Metal Embossing!

Metal Embossing

I think that learning new things every now and then makes life very interesting. Learning new forms of art has always been something of an inner calling for me. Whenever I have come across a new form of art I wanted to know how it was done, what was its history, where did it come from, how did it evolve and how is it being practiced today?

I have dabbled in different types of art forms but mostly I have worked with fabric, thread, wool, felt, suede, wax, beads, knits, colors, dyes etc. but never with metal. It had always bugged me that I didn’t know how to work on metal or stone or wood. The closest I have been to wood is when framing my artwork and that’s about it. I used to ask myself that question all the time but not anymore. I got the opportunity to learn and practice an art form that uses metal, light sheet metal (not steel or fabricated metals which falls under industrial category) to be precise.

This time on my trip to India I learned the art of Metal Embossing at an  art school “Nirmal Kala Mandir” in the city of Lucknow. Initially the whole process looked difficult but in the last few months I have learned that the key to this art form is in the “tools”. This form of art is all done by hand. This is not pressure embossing which has industrial uses. I wasn’t able to get much done in the first week but after few days of practice I just took off. Playing with different kinds of metals like copper, aluminum, brass felt great under my hands. The art is in how to emboss (push out) the metal sheets in different designs and forms, using simple tools. The effect of embossing give a luster to the metal and adds a textured dimension to the design. There is a lot more to Metal Embossing and I would like to write more about it. But For now enough about the art form let’s get to creating some work using this wonderful art form. The one piece I have created (pictured here) will be on sale on Etsy very soon.

In addition to Metal Embossing I also learned two more awesome art forms during my trip to India. Yes two more, isn’t that great? I will share more about them in the next blog posts.

Till next time… take care and happy crafting!

Love is in the air!

Valentine’s day is not too far and love is in the air. This time of the year always brings mixed feelings. It is cold, too cold in most parts of the world, but there there is this ‘day of love and romance’ lurking around the corner. It kindles the feeling of love, nostalgia and romance. For most it reminds them when they were in love but for few lucky ones it is the time to rejoice and feel the warmth and security of the love they still have.

Happy Loving!

Product photography can be tricky!

I have been struggling since last ten days – first I haven’t found any models for the handicraft items I created earlier last week. I had created brooches and hair-pins for young girls and couldn’t find anybody to model for that. The other issue is with the shiny and sparkly material that I used on the brooches and hairpins that I created. This material is very hard to photograph. It doesn’t come out well in the pictures. What is even more frustrating is that when I use images of kids and then add these brooches/hairpins on them the final image doesn’t come out well either. No matter how much of photoshopping I do on these images, they don’t seem right. The images of brooches/hairpins look good only when they are worn by a real person. Earlier I have used dolls to display the brooches/hairpins but the doll head is too small in comparison to the the hairpins and it makes the image look fake and odd.

Well what can I do? So today I decided to continue my work and blog without the baby model. However I did find a beautiful pet model “Snoop”. He looks really handsome in this snazzy Merry Christmas bandanna. Thanks to Linda and Sarah for letting Snoop model.  In Snoop’s scarf I used plain fabric color instead of sparkly stuff and as you can see it has come out much better. I am going to continue to make the same stuff (scarves/brooches/hairpins) in other materials that is not so shiny and sparkly and see if I can avoid this problem.

I have few more things cooking related to the fun jewelry concept. I will put them on the blog as soon as I have some ready.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Christmas is almost here…!

Christmas is almost here and I am busy designing and working on artworks on the holiday theme. With that in mind, this morning I came across this desktop background which is so good and christmasy that I couldn’t help sharing this free Christmas gift with everybody. The credit for this well designed desktop background goes to Jaro Mlkvy from Slovakia and I came across it on Smashing Magazine (one of the best online web design magazine).
